Automation in the pharmaceutical industry
Automation of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, especially the automation of granulation and tablet pressing systems is being studied. The project is a part of a national research program on process technologies in pharmaceutical industry and is conducted in co-operation with Finnish pharmaceutical companies and other universities.
Laboratory scale data logging, monitoring and control systems have been constructed for laboratory and pilot scale granulation processes. Also computerised data management, data manipulation and data analysis methods for the acquired process data have being studied and implemented.
Another case study has been a computerised tablet press simulation system which has been designed and built. The aim of the simulator is to enable studies of new tablet pressing methods. The simulator will also be able to simulate various types of existing tablet press machines. Both pilot systems are presently used by pharmaceutical laboratories for research and development purposes.
